hi i got banned for drink driving seven years ago im trying to get insurance and it only asked me for driving offences for the last 5 years

As most insurance companies ask for convictions in the last 5 years, you're right not to state a conviction which happened before that time period. However for some convictions, the penalty points stay on the licence for a longer period, so you may have to disclose that bit of information if they ask you whether you have any points on your licence.
