Renewing driving licence at 73, what are the steps?
Hi.. I am 73 in December this year...what is the procedure for renewing my licence (it expires in a few months). I find the general instructions online are just a little confusing!!! Regards DAVID A

This is fairly straightforward - DVLA contacts you 3 months before your licence is due to expire with an application for renewal (D46P form).
It's the same procedure that you did when you renewed your licence at 70. It lasts for 3 years which means that every 3 years you have to do it again. This is just to make sure that you are still able to drive safely.
The easiest way would be to do this online as it saves you the cost of a stamp and a trip to the Post Office but if you're not comfortable doing that, then filling out the paper form with a pen and posting it works too.
In that case, you will need to obtain the D46P application form to send to DVLA Swansea and if you do not have any medical conditions which will affect your driving, you should receive a new driving licence to last you for another three years, that is, till you are 76, after which you will have to do the same process again if you wish to keep on driving.
Unfortunately the D46p form is not available for download from the DVLA's website and you also cannot get it from the Post Office. So if you do not receive the letter to renew your driving licence 90 days before your current licence expires, you can use the D1 form (application for new licence) instead.
Note that you do not need to pay anything for the new licence as it is free for 70 plus.
what happens if not been sent a renewal notice
Just fill in the D1 form as suggested above.
Do you need a doctors certificate when renewing licence at 76?
My husband's passport has expired, does this make a difference to renewing his driving licence at age 73?
I wish my wife to apply for renewal of my driving licence on line as I am not computer literate, and it would seem to be a more satisfactory method of obtaining my renewed licence. George Lindsay Reekie.
I am in Spain when my driving licence is due to expire
Yes you can easily renew it online and can send your application 90 days (3 months) before it expires. So do that before you travel to Spain.
Do you have to provide new photo?
If you have a paper licence, then you need to send a photo.
If you have the photocard licence, the photo lasts for 10 years but you can send a new photo if you want to.
