You are able to drive before you receive the physical licence back but some conditions have to be fulfilled first. Please see the criteria that have to be met.
Also did the court that revoked your licence imposed any special conditions? Sometimes they may ask you to take an extended driving test so then you wouldn't be able to drive until you've passed that.
In any case, I suggest you to give them a ring on 0300 790 6801 to see whether they have received your application and check whether they are likely to accept it. If for any reason (which they will let you know), they will be rejecting it then you cannot drive but if they they think it's all good, then you can start driving once your ban is over while they process your application and send it back to you.
Hello thankyou for the reply no when I was in court I was not told of any special conditions and I had to send my licence to dvla as it was 56 day ban , I actually got to speak to dvla and we spoke about section 88 and it was quite a pleasure to here the same response from them as you've given me so looks like I'll be back on the road on Tuesday!
