Keeping NCD with no car

I had 12 years of No Claims Discount accrued on my insurance policy, but have now sold the car and don't expect to buy another for the forseeable future (I hire cars on an ad-hoc basis instead).

My understanding is that if I don't buy a new policy within about 2 years, I will lose my NCD (NCB) entirely -- but am looking for advice on preventing that happening please.

For example, could I insure a friend's car in my name for a day or so (even though he has his own insurance on it already)? Would that cause the NCD to be "extended" for a further 2 years?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

With short term policies, you do not get any no claims benefits. So insuring your friend's car for a day or a month won't make any difference.

What you'll have to do is just before the end of the 2 year period (say 1 year 11 months), you have to get an annual car insurance policy in your name to prevent losing your previous NCB. There's no other way around this I'm afraid.

Many thanks for that info. So would I be able to insure a car for which I'm not the registered owner? ...and would it matter if the car was already insured by someone else (i.e. the registered owner)?

I really don't want to have to actually buy a car just for this purpose ...unless it was a really cheap one; maybe something like a mobility scooter? Just a thought.

Have something to say?
