Is it possible to insure a Canadian citizen to drive my UK car?
I am wanting to lend my car to a friend for a few days later this year. The issue is that he is now a Canadian citizen, and holds a current Canadian driving license. He tells me that he could get an international driving license fairly quickly if that would help. He is originally from the UK, learnt to drive here, and had a UK license which he never sent back to the DVLA, although he has lost it and obviously the address would be wrong. I suspect that UK license would be invalid now anyway? Do you know of any way in which I would be able to insure him on my UK car for a fortnight or so (in June this year)? My current insurer won't, and from my initial searches on the Internet that seems typical. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I have read somewhere that Hertinsurance.com might, although their website mentions nothing about it.

Canadian foreign licence holder looking for 20 days insurance
I want to borrow a friend's car for 20 days starting today, may 20 2010. I drive on a full Canadian licence, been here in the UK for 3 months and been driving for 28 years, no accidents. Can you insure?

Here at fancyAcar, we do not not sell any insurance products I'm afraid. However here's a list of companies which do short term car insurance which you may find helpful. I suggest you give them a call and see what they can offer you (there's only 7 or 8 in the list).
I've just realised that you needed the 20 days car insurance starting from yesterday actually. I hope you have found what you're looking for. If you have, I'll be interested to know which company you got insured with and for how much. If you haven't and need help, just ask.

Without a UK driving licence, temporary car insurance cannot be purchased. You can ask your relative whether his insurance company in Canada is willing to cover him to drive your car in the UK. If that's not possible, then the other option is to hire a car as this is covered by rental car insurance but that comes at a cost and it wouldn't solve the problem of you letting your Canadian relative drive your car.

For temporary insurance, insurers do not accept licences from Australia, USA or Canada. Therefore you will not be able to insure your cousin on your car for 3 weeks. However you can ask your cousin to get an international cover from Canada itself so that he can drive your car when he gets here (the same thing that British people do when they go abroad, get for example a European Insurance Cover Note from their insurers before travelling). This will be a better option for both of you.
