There are a number of reasons why you would consider car donation. For example, you might be paying registration or parking fees for a car you are not using and you are looking for a way to dispose your car without any hassles. Or perhaps your car broke down and the cost to get it fixed is more than you are willing to spend.

So what are the benefits of donating your car?

You might be thinking why you would give away your car to charity when you can sell it and get some cash for it. Well unless you know somebody who's going to take your car without any questions and give you the money, you might be spending quite some money on advertisements and need to devote time for the potential buyers. If you decide to trade it or scrap, the truth is that you will be getting just a fraction of its real value.

So the smart option is car donation! The charity concerned will handle almost everything for you. They will make arrangements to pick up the car at no costs to you and supply you with the necessary paperwork. Therefore you will be helping a good cause and at the same time reaping the benefits of donating your car especially if you pay tax at the higher rate in the UK. Say the charity is going to get £600 from the sale of your car, they will be able to claim 28% on that amount through Gift Aids from the Inland Revenue, that is a further £168, bringing the total to £768. And you will be able to claim back 18% of the sale price for yourself if you're a high rate taxpayer or donate this sum as well to the charity.

How to donate your car?

The charities have made it easy for you now. In essence, they will help you determine the value of your to-be-donated-car, and all you have to do is complete a car donation form, provide the vehicle details, and arrange for your car to be picked up at no charge. A tow truck will then come where the vehicle is kept and take it away. You will need the following information though:

  • Which make & model is the car
  • What is its registration number
  • When does the MOT expire
  • When will the road tax finish

Who will accept my car for donation?

Many people have been asking me where they can donate their cars in the UK. A popular choice among charities is Oxfam but there are many others to choose from as well. If the charity you want to donate your car to does not have the facilities to put your car to good use, then you can contact GiveAcar.co.uk and they'll be able to sell your car and give the money to your chosen charity.

Do good and good things will happen to you!

Giving taxed car to someone

I am aware I cannot sell a car with road tax included, but would like to know if I can gift my taxed car to someone.

We are a community based organization working with groups of widows and orphans and vulnerable children. We are in desperate need of a van which we can use an ambulance since most of the widows and orphans are victims of HIV/AIDS. The van can also be used to transport food to the orphans home center. We are financially insufficient and any friend who would wish to support us can do so kindly. We are in position to maintain and fuel the van.Any information please contact Hezron Sande- CEO - Concern Kenya Organization

Hi This is a wonderful thought!! To donate a car to charity! Well I work for a women's aid group and we are in desperate need of a car, but unfortunately we just do not have the funding. We are looking to get a car for our children services team, this way we would be able to transport the children from our refuges and outreach programmes. It would enable us to have more trips/activities days out and would make the children so much happier. As I am sure you can all imagine these children are going through a lot (fleeing/fled domestic abuse) and could really do with a lift or a bit of happiness in their lives. We do try our best to arrange regular trips but as i'm sure you can imagine with the cost of the trips and transport (minibus hires) it's sometimes impossible to do on a regular basis. If there is anyone that could help us or know of someone then that would be a wonderful help. We would require a large vehicle, ideally a people carrier (7 seater) to enable these trips. But any information you can give would be great. Many Thanks Sarah Elson
