At the moment seat belts are made to fit people who have a 47.2 inch hip circumference and a 42 ½ inch waist circumference. While these dimensions will fit the majority of passengers and drivers, there are some people who may not be able to sit comfortably with a standard seat belt in place.

It is against the law to drive without a seatbelt and this applies for passengers in a car as well. Under no circumstances are people allowed to remove their seatbelts as it is for their safety as well as others around them. Note that when flying, the seatbelt in the aeroplane may sometimes be too tight and give an uncomfortable feeling and therefore using an extender will make your journey more pleasant while keeping you secure at all times.

How to extend the seatbelt of your car?
A seat belt extender can add some well needed length to a standard seatbelt. As most car manufacturers do not take into account the length of a universal seatbelt for those who may need a little extra, car owners are forced to look for them elsewhere. A seat belt extender connects to your existing belt buckle by adding at least 8 inches in length. For obese people this will enable them to continue being independent by using their car for day to day transport and errands such as shopping. Pregnant women can also benefit from a seat belt extender as they may find wearing a constricting standard seatbelt to be uncomfortable after some time when they have a bigger belly.

As car manufacturers rarely make longer seat belts, you will need to find a company that does and the internet is a great source for this and you could get seat belt extenders for as little as £7. You cannot just go and buy a universal one as the make; model and year of manufacture will need to be taken into account. You shouldn’t have too many problems finding a seat belt extender that fits well as many motoring shops are now starting to stock them as the demand for them has risen a lot in the last few years.

There have been reports of seat belt extenders that do not attach properly and are loose. If you attach a seat belt extender, then check to see if it’s safe by tugging on it; it should not release itself when pulled. If it does then it is faulty and does not conform to European Standards and should be returned. All seat belt extenders should state on it that it conforms to European Standards and manufactured in an ISO 9001:2000 quality controlled environment. If the seat belt extender has not safety markings, it is probably a fake one that could seriously compromised your safety and you should not use it under any circumstances.
