Recession or not, driving a mini cab can allow you to work independently or for a company. Wherever you go, there will always be someone who will need transport and will sometimes choose a mini cab as it can be faster. This is especially true in cities or busy towns because driving your own private vehicle there can cost a lot more than taking a taxi when you take into account things like congestion charge, high parking fees and limited spaces for parking.

Where to find mini cab jobs?
Mini cab firms are always hiring staff; there will always be a demand for airport runs as this is most popular.  You can find local jobs by driving around the mini cab firms - those that are advertising will usually have a sign up in the window. There are also websites that are only for mini cab drivers and there are jobs all over the country. As long as you have a licence, there is no reason as to why you won’t get employment as a taxi driver. If you are willing to work 50+ hours, then you can make between £250 -£400 a week after paying rent//petrol and your mini cab insurance and that's a lot more than what other jobs pay to be honest.

If you have regular work coming in from a mini cab job, then the rewards can be very good as some places will also mean better tips on top of the fare but mini cabs do attract long and unsocial hours. Peak times are when mini cabs are most needed as some people also use one on a daily basis as an alternative to public transport. Flight arrivals and departures also vary greatly so you may find that you are forever at the airport.

If you like to meet new people, drive around the same roads daily, can put up with rude or strange passengers, then a mini cab job is the right one for you. If you are not very social, cannot stand repetitive locations and do not have people skills, then do not go into the mini cab business.

There has been a sharp decline in people needing mini cabs overall so you need to ask yourself if it is worth it. You will also need to take into account that you will need mini cab insurance that costs on average £2,000 a year and also a private hire vehicle licence. Many people think they will save money by obtaining a fake licence and work for a company that is also not licensed. If this is the case and you end up needing to make a claim your insurers may refuse for failure to disclose information truthfully.
