We all dread that time of year when MOT is up for renewal; not only do you have to pay a fee for a qualified mechanic to look at your car but if the car is over 3 years old, there may be small parts or work to be carried out so that it passes the MOT test. You can always decline work to be carried out but you may forfeit the fee you paid and no MOT certificate will be issued as a result.

This is why it is important for vehicle owners to have their car serviced at regular intervals so that they can keep an eye on the general state of the car and any problems that may occur. Brake pads, clutch and tyres are the first to have to be replaced in most cars depending on how much it is used but this can be expensive if it is an unexpected demand.

Why use a mobile mechanic?

Not many people use a mobile mechanic as most will usually go with a local garage or chain that is well established but they don't always have convenient appointment times unless you pre-book weeks ahead. Mobile mechanics have years of experience but will sometimes cost less as they travel around a lot saving money on overheads such as a garage. They are qualified to carry out most work but also come out at a time that suits you and not the other way round. With many people having full time jobs and a family to raise, ringing all your local garages for a convenient time to bring your car in is an unwanted hassle.

If you decide to use a mobile mechanic, then tell them what make, model and year of manufacture the vehicle is as not all parts are easy to get hold of. If a mechanic doesn't have the part on him, then it is most likely going to be ordered in and no additional charge will be made to come back another time to fix it. Mobile mechanics rely on satisfied customers to pass the word on that they are competent and reliable so ask your neighbours and friends if they can recommend one for you.

Sometimes you may be able to get parts cheaper by going to the manufacturer direct, if a mechanic gives you a quote look it over and do some research first before accepting blindly, remember they need to make a profit too. It is important that you ask how much their call out charges are and an estimated repair fee if possible before you call in a mobile mechanic.
