I am 28 and have held my full driver's licence for approximately 10 months. Is there any way of getting temp cover for me to drive my friend's car? Every temp insurance site I have visited has not accepted anyone who has held their licence for less than 12 months.

Hi,

This was really helpful! I've just got insured on ecar as a new driver (license for 2 months) to drive for one day. The registered owner is a friend and my reason for driving is to share a journey and the quote was £41.00. I'm 26.

It does work if you get insured as an alternative driver e.g get your mum or dad to insure that car as proposer and you get insurance on that same car as driver no.2 but it's not for a couple of days or months but it works annually!

Mike,

Annual car insurance is not a problem here but temporary car insurance is if the driver does not have at least a full year's driving experience. The two main things about getting insurance cover for short periods is that you need to be 21 or over and have held your driving licence for over a year.

Yes, there is. Type ecar in google they provide monthy or daily cover at a cheap price. I'm 21 passed test last month and driving 1600cc polo on monthly cover at 150 pounds. If I want to cancel I just cancel direct debit with no charge and then go another month when I need!

You are right but eCar will only insure you for a minimum of 1 whole month if you hold your licence for less than a year. You will not be able to get insurance cover for periods shorter than this and this is renewable on a monthly basis as well, so no 1 month 10 days insurance - it has to be complete months.

One of the criteria for short term cover is to have held your full licence for at least 1 year (12 months).

So you cannot get temporary car insurance (1-28 days) if you do not satisfy this requirement.

Insurers want to minimise paying out in the event of a claim, so younger drivers have more strict rules as they are classified as high risks.

An alternative would be to go with eCar Insurance as there's no minimum term for having held your licence but cover is only provided for 1 month or longer.
