Everywhere you go these days, be it at your local supermarket or the airport, you're bound to see signs about 'going green'. So what's this hype all about now and what has green got to do with car insurance? It's not just the name of a new insurance company I can assure you but it's rather a concept.

There are 4 categories of people in my opinion. The first category of people relates to those who understand the growing problem of pollution and how alarming it is at this point in time to save the earth. These people want to make a real effort to protect and save our planet. The second group of people are those who see an opportunity in making money by pretending to care for the environment but all they are really interested in is make profits. The third category of people are just trend followers and don't really make a conscious effort to do their bit in protecting the earth but just want to be seen as cool when they brag about what they are currently doing. People who don't really care what is happening and don't have a clue about any dangers of pollution belong to the fourth group.

What's car insurance got to do with saving the planet?

Car insurance wouldn't exist if there were no cars. Owning a car and driving pollutes the environment because of the nasty fumes that comes out of your exhaust when fuel is burnt to make your car run. At the moment, most cars run on petrol and diesel which are not eco-friendly at all and it's destroying our planet. When you think of nature, you think of green scenery. That is why going green is a term used to make people aware that we need to work with nature and not against it. Anything that will harm nature should be avoided or limited in use.

Since cars cannot be banned from running for economical reasons, green car insurance is a concept where your insurance company will help the environment in a way or another if you insure your car with them.

How does green car insurance help me do my bit for the environment?

Companies like ibuyeco will give £5 to an eco charity for every policy sold. These eco charities will use the donation to help the environment in many ways. Carbon offsetting is another way insurers like The Green Car Insurance company is working towards greener environments. They will offset 100% of your annual car carbon dioxide emissions by planting trees which breathe in the CO2 instead of having the dangerous gas destroy the ozone. There's also a 'Green Wheels' policy offered by More Than which focuses on people's individual driving habits and tells them how they can become more environmentally friendly through simple tips like hard acceleration and sudden brake, number of short journeys made and amount of time car is left idle.

A green car insurance can definitely help the planet but driving should really be limited to important or indispensable journeys or no driving at all if you want to make a difference, well unless an alternative fuel which doesn't cause any pollution of any sort is discovered and used in cars.
